Advanced Communication Skills

Multiple dates

The aim of this two-day interactive course is to enhance health care professionals’ communication skills when delivering sensitive conversations relating to end of life care. There will be the opportunity to observe real-life conversations relating to end of life issues. Participants will be expected to develop their own skills through taking part in role play within a safe and supportive environment. Participant numbers are small to ensure the learning is person focused. The following topic areas are covered:

  • Reinforcement of core communication skills
  • Practical use of the Calgary Cambridge Communications Skills model
  • Review of the evidence base for effective communication
  • Skills practice in advance care planning and end of life conversations

This course is facilitated by Judy Le Marquand: Practice Development Sister, and Doctor Nicky Bailhache: Associate Specialist in Palliative Care.

Is this course for me?

The course is suitable for all healthcare workers whose practice involves end of life conversations and have previously undertaken communication skills training at intermediate level in order to be familiar with communication skills models.
