Happy Pride Month!
This month is a joyful and colourful display of love, unity, and resilience, with events and activities that promote inclusivity, educate the public, and celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities.
James Hill, our Lead Practitioner for Community Services, shares his reflections on Pride Month:
“Pride Month always gives me a moment to pause and truly reflect. As a gay man growing up in the 80s and 90s, the world felt very different. I experienced moments that, looking back, we would now recognise as discrimination - but at the time, they were often unspoken, brushed aside, or simply accepted as “normal.” I don’t share that to dwell on the past, but to recognise the journey - and how far we’ve come. Change didn’t happen by chance. It happened because people found the courage to be visible, to stand together, and to live as their true selves, even when it was difficult.
And that’s why Pride, for me, is deeply personal. Because today, I can honestly say I feel able to be my whole, authentic self at work. That is something I carry with a huge amount of pride and gratitude. To be seen, accepted, and valued for exactly who you are is incredibly powerful - and it’s something everyone deserves.
Pride began as a protest following the Stonewall uprising - a moment of bravery where people stood up and said, enough is enough. At its heart, Pride is still about that same message: the freedom to be yourself, openly and without fear.
While Pride has its roots in the LGBTQ+ community, its meaning reaches far beyond sexuality. It speaks to something universal - the human need to belong, to be respected, and to live authentically. And that is where it connects so closely with who we are at Jersey Hospice Care.
One of our core values is being authentic - and for me, that truly sits at the heart of Pride. Being authentic means showing up as your true self, without having to hide parts of who you are. It means creating an environment where others feel safe and empowered to do the same. When we lead with authenticity, supported by being collaborative, responsible, and excellent, we create a culture where everyone can thrive - not just our patients and families, but each other as colleagues too.
But Pride is also a reminder that the journey isn’t over. Around the world, there are still places where people are not free to be themselves - where being gay is still illegal, and where individuals face discrimination simply for who they are. That’s why Pride matters. It’s both a celebration of progress and a quiet, powerful commitment to continue standing for inclusion and equality.
So, this month, I invite you to reflect, to celebrate, and to continue building a culture where authenticity is not just encouraged but truly embraced.
Because when we feel safe to be ourselves, we don’t just exist - we flourish.
And most importantly, never forget - you are absolutely fabulous exactly as you are."
