Digital legacy planning is the process of managing and organising your digital property so it can be accessed, transferred, or closed after your death. Since so much of our lives are now online, legacy planning needs to go beyond physical assets and also cover digital assets.
Digital assets can include:
Financial accounts: online banking, PayPal, cryptocurrency wallets, investment apps.
Business assets: websites, domain names, monetised YouTube channels, social media accounts with business value.
Personal content: photos, videos, blogs stored online or on devices.
Memberships/subscriptions: streaming services, airline miles.
Communication & identity: email accounts, social media profiles, cloud storage.
Online accounts: store accounts, travel, loyalty schemes
Dealing with digital accounts can feel overwhelming, especially when you are grieving, but it doesn’t all have to be done at once. The following approach may be helpful;
Gather information: Emails, phone records, or saved passwords might let you know which accounts your loved one used.
List the accounts: Start with the ones that feel most important—banking, email, social media, subscriptions.
Contact the companies: Visit the Help or Support section of each website. Most have a form or contact number for reporting a death.
Keep a record: Note who you’ve contacted and what they said—it’ll help you stay on top of things.
Save special memories: Before you close photo storage accounts or social media profiles, you might want to download pictures, messages, or videos that hold meaning.
Just like writing a Will or arranging a pre-paid funeral plan, setting out what you’d like to happen to your online accounts can take the pressure off your family and loved ones. Consider listing your accounts and passwords and keep these in a safe place, decide what you would like to happen to your social media accounts- memorialise or delete?, and let someone you trust know how to access your wishes, in writing if possible.
