Emma and Graham's Story

Tuesday 20 Oct 2026

“Emma: My Mum got diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2022. Prior to that, she'd been fit and well, so it kind of came as a bit of a shock. She had treatment, but then last March, she became very unwell and needed palliative care.

She ended up being [at Hospice] for three months - which is something that we never expected, but I couldn't have asked for a better place for my Mum to spend her final days. Even though my Mum was the patient, we were all looked after as a family.

The memories that we made here we never would have been able to make had my Mum been anywhere else. We're just so grateful for the care that she received here.

We couldn't have got through the last two years without Chester [our dog]. Having him be able to come to Hospice was something that lightened the mood. He's kind of an unofficial therapy dog, especially to my Mum. Chester would lie on her bed with her and just make her feel so much more relaxed. Having him with us made such a difference.

Graham: Her journey here means that the work of Hospice is spread. The more the wider community doesn't have this fear of Hospice - and it's known as such a necessary part of the community as a whole - I think the better. [Hospice] gave Nicky a lot of dignity at the end of her life and for that we'll always be so thankful to the people here.

Emma: I don't have the words to express my gratitude to everybody up here because the service [Hospice] give is just something so special."
