Michelle Dewhurst

Complementary Therapist and Activities Co-ordinator

When did you start at Jersey Hospice Care?
I started at Jersey Hospice Care two years ago.

How do you make a difference at Jersey Hospice Care?
Complementary therapies are used alongside conventional medical nursing to help improve health and well-being.

With the help of our volunteers, we offer reiki, massage, reflexology, guided relaxation, manicures and pedicures to all our patients and their relatives and carers.

What did you do before you worked here?
I gained qualifications in Hospitality and Catering Management and for 12 years worked in the industry. This allowed me to travel and to work in some amazing locations. Following two years working on a luxury yacht, I decided a change of career was in order and chose to work as a home carer in the community.

From my time working with the elderly, I developed an interest in elderly and palliative care massage. I decided to develop the complementary therapies I had learnt and cultivate a new passion in this field.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working for Jersey Hospice Care?
I enjoy introducing people to the benefits of Complementary Therapy. A lot of my work is non-verbal and it is a privilege to be able to be a calming influence and to hold space for people to allow them to relax fully.

I enjoy working for Jersey Hospice Care immensely. It’s an honour to work with such experienced staff and volunteers who have all helped me to feel welcome and part of the organisation.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy receiving complementary therapy treatments in my free time particularly reiki, reflexology and acupuncture.

I love to cook, enjoy being creative, getting out in nature and relax watching motorbike racing.
