Charmaine Dwyer

Adult and Paediatric Staff Nurse

When did you start at Jersey Hospice Care?
I joined Jersey Hospice Care in February 2018.

How do you make a difference at Jersey Hospice Care ?
As an adult and paediatric nurse I have transferable skills between both service areas. I have worked on the In Patient Unit and currently work in the Children and Young People’s team. I feel passionate about the ongoing developments of the Children and Young People’s service.

An improved island wide provision for the care of children with life limiting and life threatening conditions, which supports the needs of their families and carers across the community, will be wonderful and is much needed.

What did you do before you worked here?
I worked in a Special Care Baby Unit and on children’s wards in the UK, Jersey and New Zealand. I have a wide experience of providing care to children that includes nursing children with complex developmental needs, special needs and life threatening illnesses in hospital and community respite settings.

I also gained interesting overseas experiences when I travelled the world. It opened my eyes to fascinating cultural norms in different countries. The opportunity to meet a cross-section of people has increased my awareness of and respect for the relationship between culture and health. It can be a sensitive area and I am respectful of that.

What are your plans / do you hope to achieve in the next six months?
I am excited about being part of the Children and Young People’s team and contributing to the growing developments of the service, especially as more referrals are received.

What do you enjoy most about your job / working for Jersey Hospice Care?
Meeting the wonderful and inspiring people who come through hospice. Providing nursing care for adults and children who are ill and are at end of life, maintaining their comfort and dignity. Knowing we make a difference at such an important time in the lives of all the families we support.

I enjoy working alongside the wonderful, hard working and dedicated staff at hospice. It’s a great team.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love playing with my gorgeous puppy, spending time with my fabulous family, meditation, photography and going to festivals.
