Day Hospice

We aim to help improve how you feel on a day to day basis, through support from our staff, volunteers and other patients and by engaging you in a choice of activities.

The Day Hospice is based in the King Centre at Jersey Hospice Care. It provides specialist palliative care for people with life limiting illnesses; where the focus of care has changed from cure to best supportive care. The role of the team is to ensure all people receive high quality care and support with any physical, psychological, spiritual or social issues they are finding challenging.

A unique part of Day Hospice is the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation, gaining support and guidance from one another. This is possibly the most important element; people can derive a sense of optimism, comfort and great camaraderie from being part of the Day Hospice community.

What happens at Day Hospice?

You decide what support you need and what activities you would like to take part in when you meet with a Day Hospice Nurse. You will meet with the nurse before attending to go through your concerns and plan your care.

You may decide during your day you would like to:

  • have advice and support from your nurse
  • chat with other patients
  • attend the gym
  • talk with a member of the Chaplaincy Team
  • receive complementary therapies
  • undertake arts, crafts or gardening

Who will care for me?

Care is delivered by experienced nurses, working with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, to ensure a holistic approach to your care. The multi-disciplinary team comprises physiotherapists, Lymphoedema therapists, complementary therapists, chaplains, emotional support counsellors as well as a team of dedicated volunteers. Medical support continues to be provided by your own GP, therefore, if you need to see a doctor whilst attending the Day Hospice, your GP will be contacted with your permission. Please note that although Jersey Hospice Care provides a free service, the cost of GP visits to you in Day Hospice will continue to be your responsibility, in the same way it would if you were in your own home.

What is the role of the Day Hospice Nurse?

Our role is to enable people to have the best quality of life. We will do this by

  • listening to your concerns about your illness and those of your family/carer
  • assessing any symptoms that are troublesome and making suggestions of how these can be improved
  • giving you the opportunity to discuss your care, what is important to you and what your wishes are about your future care
  • Liaising with other colleagues at Jersey Hospice Care, as well as community and hospital services, who can help support you in different ways.

When and where is Day Hospice open?

Day Hospice staff are available five days a week, Monday to Friday, and can be located in the King Centre.

For how long can I attend Day Hospice?

This will depend on your needs. Most people attend once a week for approximately six months. We would suggest you attend for 12 weeks initially and this may be extended if needed.

If your needs change, it may be appropriate to transfer your care and support to another of Jersey Hospice Care’s services or another health and social care provider. This would be discussed with you and your family, finding out your wishes and the options available.

Are you able to help me with transport?

Our Volunteer Drivers may be able to help with transport. You will need to be able to get in and out of a car unaided and one of our team will need to visit your home first to check everything is safe for our Volunteer Driver to collect you.

If it is not possible, we will discuss alternatives with you and your family.

What do I do if I want to come to Day Hospice?

If you already receive support from Jersey Hospice Care, you can talk with our staff about attending Day Hospice.

If you are not receiving support at present, you can discuss coming to Day Hospice with your doctor or nurse who can make a referral on your behalf. Alternatively, you can refer yourself, subject to your GP’s consent, by telephoning the Day Hospice staff, Monday to Friday for further information.
