This session is delivered by Mary Le Hegarat MBACP BACP, Registered and Accredited Counsellor and a member of the Association of Bereavement Service Coordinators and Vicki Luce, trainee Community Bereavement Counsellor.
About the facilitators
Mary trained as a Counsellor with Highlands College Jersey and was awarded her Advanced Diploma in Counselling in 2011. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy granted Mary the status of Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist in 2017.
In 2010, when Mary was studying for her Advanced Counselling Diploma at Highlands College Jersey, she commenced a student placement with the Community Bereavement Service, here at Jersey Hospice Care. On completion of this placement in 2010, she continued to be a volunteer, committed to supporting this invaluable service for the community of Jersey. Also completed in 2010, specific training with Winston’s Wish in supporting bereaved families, children and young people. Mary has been supporting bereaved children, young persons and adult clients for the service, using a person centred approach.
Since 2015, Mary was appointed the post of full-time bereavement counsellor to support adults, young people and children and their families for the Bereavement Service. As well providing support for those coming to terms with a life limiting illness. Providing 1-1 and facilitating group support. Part of her role has been supporting and facilitating training for Jersey Hospice Care around grief and loss, as well as, recognising the importance of looking after your own emotional well-being.
Vicki is currently studying for her Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and is a Trainee Counsellor with the Bereavement Service at Jersey Hospice Care.
Since taking up this post with Jersey Hospice Care in 2017, Vicki has been supporting bereaved children, young people and adults. She also works within the new Children and Young People’s team providing Emotional and Bereavement support to children and young people who have a life-limiting or life-threatening condition and their families.
Vicki has 15 years’ experience in Youth Work, where she also worked as the Training Officer developing and delivering various training courses. In 2018, Vicki has attended bereavement training with Winston’s Wish in the UK and works alongside Mary to help deliver the Understanding and Managing Grief and Loss workshop.
The following topics will be covered:
- Communicating effectively and compassionately
- Developing confidence talking about difficult and sensitive topics
- Understanding loss and the factors affecting the grieving process
- Relate theories of loss to our own and others’ experiences
- Self-awareness in supporting others
- Signposting to support
- Looking after self

This course will be of interest to those working or volunteering in bereavement services, health and social care workers, education professionals
Places are limited to 8.
We all come into contact with bereaved people during the course of our working lives – be it clients, customers or colleagues – and even the most confident person can find it hard to know what to say.
This interactive workshop is designed for anyone encountering bereaved people in their professional lives and will be helpful for anyone who wants to understand the issues surrounding bereavement and how to communicate with clients, patients and customers after someone close to them has died.
Payment is required to secure the course.
If you cancel the booking within 30 days of the course start date you will still be charged. We do accept replacement delegates up until the last minute or you could arrange to transfer your place onto a later course.
If Jersey Hospice Care has to cancel the course either due to not reaching minimum capacity for the course or due to an unavoidable event such as trainer sickness or adverse weather conditions, we will get in touch to offer an alternative future course date or to offer a refund.
