Fundraising

Running Jersey Hospice Care doesn’t come cheap, and although people are very generous with donations, legacies etc., the Fundraising Committee and their helpers work extremely hard to raise enough money to cover the £5,480 which it costs to run Jersey Hospice Care every day.

How do we go about fundraising? Well, there are lots of different ways. Some events are organised by members of our Fundraising Committee – I’m thinking of things like our very popular annual Dragon Boat Racing at the Harbour, a Tennis tournament every June, Open Gardens, our Christmas Bazaar, and getting rid of real Christmas trees (over 300 this year!) – just to give you some idea. Then there are events organised for us by supporters of Jersey Hospice Care – Doreen Hennessy’s Good Friday Walk is an excellent example. Terri Atkinson puts on a "Stars in their Eyes" show each January. Joan Power organises a Bingo evening for us each year and so on. We like to be kept informed by supporters like these as to how things are going, because we need to know what is being done in our name. Other people jump out of aeroplanes, or have their heads shaved – all sorts of things are done to raise funds for us.

You may have read about the participants who took up  Challenge Vietnam presented us with a cheque for over £425,000 from their fundraising – amazing! We are already working on another cycling challenge for 2009, and I’m fully expecting it to be over-subscribed. A fundraising event organised by Anton Seatter, one of the cyclists, was the "Tour de Jersey" and this has proved to be so popular that we are now making it an annual event – so that’s his legacy to us!

I Care For Hospice is an ongoing and very effective fundraising campaign where we ask people to pledge, through their banks, to give us £5, £10 or whatever, monthly. If each volunteer can persuade three people to sign a card, we will soon be receiving enough to fund the first two days of each month. The first week of each month would be fantastic, but we can dream, can’t we!

Fundraising is fun! It can be extremely hard work, but it’s definitely fun. From rattling a collecting can for Flag Day, to drawing a raffle at a Quiz night, to helping behind the scenes at a Fashion Show – it’s all part of helping to raise money for a very deserving charity.

Grateful thanks, Diane Weber
