Jersey Hospice

About Us

Jersey Hospice Care was founded in 1982 with the Home Care Service, but the opening of Clarkson house at Grouville in 1985 brought about the development of a comprehensive service which included Home Care, Day Hospice and In-Patient Unit (IPU) for those who needed care.  Now, as then, a combination of these options is used in order to give the most appropriate form of care to our patients.

In addition to the specialist nursing staff, there are nursing auxiliaries, cooks, cleaners and administration staff who provide a full range of services. We also have a chaplaincy team, comprising inter-denominational ministers who are available to visit patients, relatives or members of staff as required. The Hospice is administered by a Council, with a number of sub-committees, responsible for managing the various services.

Jersey Hospice Care also relies on a team of volunteers, who provide valuable help across the service. Before volunteers are allowed to work with patients and their families, they must undertake a thorough selection process and comprehensive training. Volunteers are also used in all aspects of fundraising, including the Jersey Hospice Care shops.

This year Jersey Hospice Care has been awarded a one-off grant from the States of Jersey Fiscal Stimulus Initiative to help fund the re-development of Clarkson House and enable the project to start earlier than scheduled, as part of the States’ strategy to stimulate the economy and in particular, the construction industry.

Jersey Hospice Care receives no other funding from the States of Jersey and the services are provided free of charge to our patients. We remain dependent upon the support of the public to fund the daily operating costs (currently more than £6,000) in order to maintain the high standard of care offered to our patients and their families.

You can watch this short film "Jersey Hospice Care: working hand in hand" to take you behind the scenes at Clarkson House. Thanks to Ruth Carswell, Daniela Rusowsky and Stephan M. Funk from Funk Productions and everyone else involved in making this film, which has been kindly sponsored by Carey Olsen.
