Therapies

Introduction

Jersey Hospice Care provides a comprehensive range of therapies and complementary therapies, which are available in patients’ homes, the In-patient Unit (IPU), Day Hospice and through the Bereavement Service, as well as at the designated clinic. The range of therapies includes lymphoedema, physiotherapy, aromatherapy, reflexology, acupuncture and diversional therapies. All of these are provided by skilled practitioners and in line with other services are free of charge.

Lymphoedema therapy

Lymphoedema is a swelling due to the excess accumulation of fluid in the tissues caused by inadequate lymphatic drainage. Although lymphoedema cannot be cured, the condition can be controlled with effective management of physical symptoms and care of psychological issues.

Management consists of four main elements, all of equal importance: skin care, massage, exercise and containment. Patients may be referred by their GP, Consultant, District Nurse, Hospice colleague or other health professionals. Throughout the treatment, close liaison is maintained with the patient’s GP and/or consultant.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the treatment of people by physical means for numerous health problems, ranging from muscular injury to breathing problems.  The aim is to maintain and regain mobility whilst relieving pain and tension.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the carefully selected acupuncture points along meridians (energy passages) of the body, with the aim of restoring physical, emotional and spiritual balance.

Reflexology

Reflexology is the manual stimulation of reflexes situated in the feet and hands. Stimulating the corresponding parts of the body that they control creates a natural balance and harmony within the body systems, thus reducing emotional stress and promoting relaxation.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils, all of which are derived from plants. These can be used in various ways, including massage, to assist with relaxation, anxiety, pain or tension. Aromatherapy can also help by restoring a sense of well-being.

Diversional therapy

A range of diversional therapies is offered and usually takes the form of various craft activities.
