Day Hospice Care

Introduction

The Day Hospice at Clarkson House provides facilities for people to enjoy a change of scenery, the chance to meet other people in a similar situation. You will have your medical and nursing needs discussed with nursing staff. It will allow your family or carers some free time.

The Day Hospice is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with the exception of Bank Holidays. Attendance will be discussed with the Day Hospice Sister and will depend on your needs and the availability of places. At regular intervals the Day Hospice team will meet with you to review your progress.

The typical day at Day Hospice

At around 10.00 am you will be picked-up from your home by your volunteer driver, who will normally make contact with you the night before to confirm arrangements. On arrival at Clarkson House we serve coffee or tea. For the remainder of the morning a wide range of treatments and activities are available. These may include specific nursing needs, physiotherapy, light exercises, massages, bathing, hairdressing and manicure.

At midday we serve an aperitif followed by lunch. After lunch, we serve tea or coffee in the sitting room, allowing you time to relax. In the afternoon a range of activities and entertainments are provided. These include craft and art work, musical groups (often a local school choir), games (cards and quizzes) and outings (especially in the summer months). We serve afternoon tea at 3.00 pm and at 3.30 pm your volunteer driver will arrive to take you home.

Special dietary needs
All food is home cooked in our kitchen at Clarkson House. We can cater for special dietary requirements and our chef will be pleased to arrange a meal to suit most people.

Medical needs
Please bring any tablets or other medicines you require to Clarkson House with you; they will remain your responsibility and you should continue to take them as prescribed by your Doctor. If you require any assistance or advice please do not hesitate to ask any of the nursing staff.

Spiritual needs
We recognise that this is a very personal matter and everyone’s spiritual needs are different. The Jersey Hospice Care has an ecumenical Chaplaincy team who visit Clarkson House regularly and are always willing to visit anyone on an individual basis. Your own Minister is also welcome to visit Clarkson House to see you. A short religious service is held at Clarkson House each month, which you may choose to attend. Holy Communion is available on request at any time and regularly at 12 noon on the last Wednesday of each month.

Payment
As with all services provided by the Jersey Hospice Care, the Day Hospice is provided free of charge. However, should you wish to make a donation, this would be gratefully received.

Health & Safety
Jersey Hospice Care complies with Health & Safety regulations and a fire drill is practised regularly.
