Jersey Christmas Walk

A total of 138 people took part in Saturday’s Jersey Christmas Walk in aid of Jersey Hospice Care (75% of sponsorship monies) and the Motor Neurone Disease Association (25% of sponsorship monies). This was more than double the amount of walkers for last year’s event and approximately £13,000 was donated to Jersey Hospice Care.

The Jersey Christmas Walk began in 2002 when a group of friends from RBS International gathered together to walk round the island in memory of their former colleague, Peter Ward, who died from cancer. Since then, it has been held every year.

There were three routes for walkers and the results were as follows:

44 mile walk – 44 started and 31 reached the finish at Ouaisne.  All 44 got as far asLes Fontaines Tavern or beyond.

26 mile walk – 12 started and 12 reached the finish at Les Fontaines Tavern.

18 mile walk – 82 started and 81 reached the finish at Ouaisne.

Marcus Liddiard was one of the walkers who was using the 44 mile route as a training session for his involvement in the world record attempt to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility next year - he dragged two car tyres all the way round the route with him!

And not feeling he’d done enough walking, another participant took a detour en-route to crossing the finish line - he walked to Red Houses at Les Quennevais to do some food shopping before making his way back to Ouaisne!

The walk organisers and Jersey Hospice Care would like to say huge thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the walk and made it the enjoyable event it was.
